Independent Research on Film Openings

From some of the openings I've written about so far, and some of the things mentioned, it probably doesn't take much of a genius to work out I'm a bit of a car nut. These film openings are my favourite car based openings, all for different reasons.

The Italian Job - 1969

First off there is The Italian Job. The end chase with the old Mini's in Turin is probably the highlight of the film, especially for me when I was younger. The film we owned was on two DVDs and I would only ever watch the second one for the car chase at the end. But that's not what I'm here to write about. The beginning with the Lamborghini Miura cruising through the alps with Matt Monroe's 'Days Like These' in the background has to be the most iconic film openings of all time. Until the very end of the opening, the opening actually has nothing to do with the film, other than setting the scene. An Italian car, the mountains in Italy (Great St Bernard Pass) and a character driving the car that looks like a stereotypical Italian. All of this then links to the film title, 'The Italian Job'. Its a fairly simple idea, but it works really well. Anyway, the end end of the opening, the Miura crashes into a bulldozer after driving into a tunnel. The wreck of a car is then pushed off the cliff into the river by the mafia.

The Transporter - 2002

The second film opening i have chosen to write about it The Transporter. This, like the Italian Job has another very simple film opening. This uses a lot of long panning shot including one shot that lasts for 20 seconds where the camera swings from the bottom left of the car round to the passenger window, revealing the driver on the other side of the car. This scene only reveals the driver and the car, as well as the location at the end (if you don't know what the old style French license plates look like, then the car coming out the car-park onto the coast road in Nice should give it away). I think what makes this opening so good is the same reason why the opening to The Italian Job is so good, the simplicity of the opening. Not a lot happens and not a lot is given away, but its still a really, really good opening.

Drive - 2011

The third opening i have chosen to write about is Drive. This opening has a bit more in it
